Movie Review: Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters
The classic fairy tale gets reborn with a new twist. The story follows Hansel and Gretel 15 years after their incident with a witch when they were kids. Now they're bounty hunters traveling the world, killing witches. Along their journey of bounty hunting they discover a new form of evil that might hold a secret to their past.
After reading a few reviews for this movie I was a little afraid that I wasn't going to like it. Pretty much every review I've read hated this movie and thought it was crap. Because of that, I went to see the movie with low expectations. Don't get me wrong, I wanted this movie to be good. I've always liked the Hansel & Gretel story since I was little and I love the Brothers Grimm.
So I was really looking forward to this movie. Not to mention my love and obsession, Jeremy Renner as Hansel. :D Thankfully I liked it a lot more than I thought I would and I didn't think it was as bad as everyone thought. It was a cheesy, fun movie. Kind of like Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which was also bad ass. The fight scenes were really cool and there was enough gore to please the horror fans and gore hounds without going over the top.
The 3D effects were fun and exciting. After seeing Texas Chainsaw 3D that had NO 3D effects, it's nice going to a movie and getting what you paid for. (Paid $13 to see that movie and got ripped off of the 3D) In my opinion, the script is the reason the movie didn't hold up well. I think they were relying way too much on making this a campy, goofy movie that resulted in hurting the film.
If they went another route with the script I think it would of made the movie better. It also would of made a lot more money at the box office. Hansel & Gretel made $19 MIL. A movie starring Jeremy Renner as one of the lead characters did lousy at the box office, seems wrong somehow. The acting was great, Jeremy and Gemma did an awesome job as Hansel & Gretel. Even though the script wasn't the greatest, they still managed to do a wonderful job despite what was given to them.
They also rushed the movie. They tried to throw in as much as possible in a short amount of time. I think they did a sloppy job at that because it was very noticeable of what they were doing. They should of made the movie a little longer so they could add everything they wanted to and have it go smoothly. At the end of the movie I couldn't help but think, that was it? Went too fast and not in a good way. When I go to see a movie with Jeremy Renner in it, I want it to last so I can savor the moment. ;)
Despite the flaws that this movie had and me thinking it was cheesy, I still enjoyed it a lot. To me, I didn't think it was a bad cheesy, it was a good cheesy that lets you enjoy the movie and have a good time. Is it Oscar worthy? No but that means nothing to me since most of the movies that are up for Best Picture at the Oscars are bleh.(IMO)
I give this movie 3 1/2 of 5 Skulls. :D
